What is the cost to live at the Ohio Veterans Homes (OVH)?

A cost calculator is available for your use. This tool is to be used as an “estimate only” and is based on the information provided. The final rate of assessment is based on verified income. These estimates are based on the eligibility of the veterans resulting in the Ohio Veterans Homes receiving the Veterans Administration (VA) per diem. Ineligibility for the VA per diem could result in additional costs.

What are the eligibility requirements for admission?

  • Resident of Ohio for one year during your lifetime
  • Honorable discharge or discharge under Honorable conditions from the U.S. Armed Forces
  • Served on active duty, other than training, during a period of War or declared armed conflict OR have been a recipient of the Purple Heart, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, or the Vietnam Service Medal
  • Be disabled by disease, wounds or otherwise, and, by reason of such disability, incapable of earning a living
  • Start the process of becoming a resident

Are private rooms available?

Sandusky Independent Living (Domiciliary/DOM+) offers private rooms with a shared bathroom. Limited private rooms are available for the veteran who reside in the Sandusky and Georgetown Nursing Home, Skilled care and Memory Care. Private room assignments are based on the veteran’s residency seniority.

What is the time frame for admission?

Admission time may vary according to the level of care that is appropriate for the veteran. The Admissions Staff will be able to provide an approximate time frame.

What levels of care are offered?

Georgetown Home – Intermediate care, Skilled Nursing care and Memory care (for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia).
Sandusky Home – Independent Living (Domiciliary/DOM+), Intermediate Nursing Care Skilled Nursing Care and Memory Care.

What items can the veteran bring upon admission to the home?

During a scheduled interview prior to admission, a Social Worker will provide a list of items the resident may bring with them.

May my spouse admit with me?

A spouse may be admitted only if he/she is a veteran who meets the eligibility requirements.

Does OVH offer respite care?

The Homes do not currently offer Respite Care.

Does OVH offer outpatient therapy to non-resident veterans?

No. Therapy is only available at OVH for those residents who reside in the Homes.

Am I permitted to bring a vehicle with me?

Automobiles are permitted in the Sandusky Home for those residents who reside in the Domiciliary (Independent Living) as long as a current driver’s license is maintained. Proof of vehicle insurance and registration is required.

Am I permitted to bring pets with me?

The only pets permitted at this time are guide dogs for the visually impaired.

Is smoking permitted at OVH?

Smoking is permitted in designated smoking areas only.
