Veterans with low incomes who are permanently and totally disabled or are age 65 and above may be eligible for support. Payments are made to bring the total income, including other retirement or Social Security, to a level set by Congress. Unreimbursed medical expenses may reduce VA countable income.
To be eligible, a veteran must have 90 plus days of active military service, at least one day having been during a wartime period. The veteran's discharge must have been under honorable conditions and their disability for reasons other than their own willful misconduct. Veterans who entered active duty on or after September 8, 1980 and officers who entered active duty on or after October 16, 1981 may have to meet a longer minimum period.
