Definition of Terms

Veterans Bonus Program

A bonus available to a person who served on active duty in the United States armed forces, except active duty for training only; veterans who were declared missing in action; veterans who were declared a prisoner of war; certain family members of a veteran killed in action or died as a result of combat-related injuries; and a veteran medically discharged or medically retired from service due to combat-related disabilities.

United States Armed Forces

Includes Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard; any active reserve component of such forces; and members of the Ohio National Guard serving on Active Duty


When used in referring to the child of a deceased veteran, includes a child born as issue of lawful marriage to which the deceased veteran was a part, a child who was legally adopted by the deceased veteran the natural child of a deceased female veteran, and the child of a deceased male veteran for whom the parent-child relationship was lawfully established under a court or administrative proceeding


Parent of veteran or person(s) standing in loco parentis for one year preceding veterans commencement of service in the United states armed forces

Resident of Ohio

A person who declares permanent residency in the State of Ohio

Bonus Qualifying periods

Qualifying dates for the Veteran’s Bonus Program are October 7, 2001-a date determined by the President of the United States as the end of the involvement of the United States armed forces in Afghanistan.

Prisoner of War

US armed forces member held in continuing custody by an enemy power during an armed conflict – designated by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Missing in Action

US armed forces member reported missing during active service or listed if he/she cannot be located after combat -- designated by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Medically Discharged or Retired

Separated, or retired from military service due to a combat related injury as designated by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Honorably discharged

A formal final judgment passed by the government upon the entire military record of a soldier, and is an authoritative declaration of service in a status of honor.

A unique set of numbers assigned to an application

Afghanistan Service Dates

Served from October 7, 2001 to a date yet to be determined by the president (Afghanistan Campaign Medal) – the area of eligibility encompasses all area of the country of Afghanistan and all air spaces above the land.
